The youngest of three brothers, Ryan Lindsey had a paper route and his siblings had a band. When the boys lost a member they told Ryan he could be in their group if he'd just buy a bass guitar. He did. Ryan Lindsey joined his first real band called Kids Eat Free.
His older brothers lost interest in their musical pursuits, but not Ryan. He began playing guitar, piano and writing his own material. He then teamed with the Norman, Oklahoma group Cheyenne playing keyboards and singing harmonies. His first recording studio experience was on Cheyenne’s debut album. The band moved to New York in 2005, but Ryan stayed in Norman to begin work on his own solo record, White Paper Beds.
Then along came the Starlight Mints with an offer for him to play on their Barsuk Records release, Drowation. Impressed by Lindsey’s studio work, the band asked Ryan to play keyboards and guitar with them on tour. He continues to record and perform with the Mints to this day.
White Paper Beds features Ryan Lindsey on vocals, guitar, bass and piano. He has been touring nationally and playing such venues as the Knitting Factory and Hotel Café in Los Angeles, DFest and Cains Ballroom in Tulsa, The Beat Kitchen in Chicago and SXSW in Austin.
Bill Bentley writes in The Sherman Oaks Sun, “There is no over-processed feel to these twelve songs, but rather the freshness of floating in a creative space with no restrictive definitions. The best of Brian Wilson’s songs wrote the book for music like this, and the fact that Ryan Lindsey’s sound is able to evoke Wilson’s name is a good omen that we’ll be hearing much more from Lindsey.”
Music critic Kathleen McCann concludes her rave review of White Paper Beds in the respected online publication Urban Pollution with, ”It’s daunting for a musician to break away from the comforts of a band and step out on his own, but Ryan Lindsey seemed to know exactly what he was doing. If his name never becomes widely known it won’t matter, because White Paper Beds is more real than pop success ever is.”
In 2008, Ryan’s music was heard on the CBS Television series, Welcome to the Captain and the CW Network’s One Tree Hill. Starbucks, The Gap and lifestyle stores throughout the U.S. and Canada are playing White Paper Beds. His music is also featured in the Sundance Film Festival Award Winning motion picture, AMERICAN TEEN coming to theaters on July 25 from Paramount Vantage. The soundtrack album from Sony/Almost Gold is scheduled for release on July 15 with Lindsey’s composition, “Let’s Go Out.” Starbucks Entertainment is releasing their New Music Quarterly on June 17 that includes Ryan’s track “Put Your Trust in Ross” from White Paper Beds. |
